Dopo New Star Soccer, è arrivato anche New Star Manager. A quali giochi vi siete ispirati?

A proposito, è tutto fittizio.

ENGLISH VERSION

We played and enjoyed New Star Manager, the latest game from Simon Read, developer and creator of the New Star Soccer series.

We asked him a few things about New Star Manager, a game who surprised us for his gameplay: simple, but deep. So, enjoy this interview with Simon.

Introduce yourself to the Italian audience.

Hello, I am Simon Read, creator of the New Star Soccer series. New Star Manager is my latest game which is currently available on PC, Mac,  iOS and Android.

After New Star Soccer, New Star Manager also made its debut. Tell us how the project was born, and what were the key points for the development of the game on PC. Which games inspired you?

New Star Manager is inspired by a few retro titles such as Player Manager and Sensible World of Soccer, where you would manage the team but also play the matches. I also wanted to take the match action of New Star Soccer further, controlling all of the players on the pitch rather than just one, which lead me towards making a management style game.

What do you think is the general overview of managerial football games, and what do you propose for the future?

My love for traditional style football management games has waned over recent years. Nothing has really changed for a long time, they just get more and more complex as they attempt to simulate reality. I wanted to break down the barrier to entry for new players who are daunted by screens full of stats and bring back the fun elements of football management.

How was the main idea behind the gameplay born? The process behind the building of the actions is really interesting: you can build incredible actions, even with less technically gifted players.

It all started with allowing the player to draw basic paths for teammates in New Star Soccer – something you can do when you become the team captain. I took that idea further, allowing you pass the ball back and forth and take shots with any player in the team. Having the action freeze whenever you have control of the ball gives it a really tactical element which I think works really well and is unique in football games.

Please, give us some numbers behind your database of players and teams.

There are over 5,000 clubs in the database but the players are procedurally generated, meaning they are created on the fly rather than being stored in a database. I’m not sure what the actual limit is but we can generate millions of individual players per club!

By the way, in the game it’s all fictitious. Have you ever thought about buying some official licenses?

It would be nice but unfortunately we don’t really have the funds for those types of licenses. We might allow players to edit the team and player names in the future but that is something we need to look into further.

We noticed a notable attention towards the customization of the stadium, and other facilities also. Will you release further updates?

We will be updating the game over the next year or so but I’m not sure what those updates will contain. Different style “super stadiums” are definitely on the list.

How come you did not expressly think of a goalkeeper trainer?

A big part of game design is deciding what to leave out. Right from the start I wanted to keep the game streamlined, only including essential elements. I felt that adding another type of coach who is only useful to a handful of your players was an extra layer of complexity for little return. That said we will continue to listen to what fans of New Star Manager would like to see!

Will you add other content, such as mini-games, or the possibility of buying contract cards or upgrading with game coins?

Again, we will listen to and evaluate all the feedback, but unlike the mobile version there are no in-app-purchases or in game shop on PC.

Will there be new updates, as well as bug fixes?

Yes, certainly over the next 12 months you will see new features being added at regular intervals. The PC and mobile versions should be virtually identical in terms of content.

It will arrive on PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch?

Development on console platforms is underway and we hope to launch them early next year.
