trine-3

ENGLISH VERSION

Trine-characters

This is the english version of interview with Frozenbyte, finnish developer team of Trine’s Trilogy and Shadowen just announced few weeks ago. We spoken about Trine 3, about origins of the characters and about the future of this saga. We spoken also Shadwen.

Enjoy the interview.

The Trine trilogy was a success, and now Trine 3 will be released on PS4 as well. Is this the end of the saga? Or do you already have some Trine 4 concepts in a drawer?

I really hope and believe it’s not the end. If we succeed with our next projects, then we might see some Trine continuation down the line. We don’t however have any concepts for Trine 4 at this stage.

Trine enthralled us. Trine 2 told us it was no dream. Trine 3, on the other hand, apparently did not manage to meet the expectation of players. How much have you paid the passage to “full” 3D?

We did pay quite the price for going 3D, it was way more expensive than we expected, and hence the result was a shorter game than what people were hoping for. I think gameplay-wise the 3D works well though, it just takes a bit of getting used to if you’re coming from the 2D Trine games.

Are you working on Trine 3 expansions?

Not at this point. We’ll have to see about returning to the Trine series once we’ve finished our other projects. If they’re successful, we might see more Trine although it’s not something I can make a promise on.

Trine has always been artistically great, with an unforgettable OST and a mind-blowing stereoscopic 3d. It even features a multiplayer highly based on cooperation . We would like to know if the creators of the saga might find something more which makes Trine so unique.

I think there’s certainly a lot of uniqueness to the characters and their abilities. Visually, Pontius perhaps is the odd one of the bunch with his big belly, and skill-wise Zoya and Amadeus are particularly different. While there are thieves and wizards in a lot of games, the skills/spells that they have in Trine are quite special, like the conjuring of boxes and the crazy utility of the grappling hook/rope.

Also when you combine all of the three characters, it makes for a very interesting trio of heroes 

Zoya, Pontus and Amadeus. How did you come up with these characters? How hard it was to make them complementary without letting their skills overlap?

They came up gradually. In the start we had pretty basic characters, i.e. a knight, a wizard, and a thief/rogue. They started evolving as we started writing the story, and there was some concept art sketches that also defined them. Pontius was perhaps clearest – everybody liked the big, bulky version – or just plain “fat” if you like, and we kind of found his voice and character almost immediately after that.

Amadeus had a more subtle evolution, and Zoya went through a couple of phases, at first she was red-haired and not using a hood or anything like that. I don’t think we realized how much her clothes reminded of another game hero… But overall we are happy with the characters, they’ve been a good bunch!

Their skills also diversified at the same time, and it’s definitely been a challenge to make them complementary. Usually it works very well, and the different skills all really shine in co-op! We love all the YouTube videos of co-op mayhem. 🙂

Are you planning to release a retail Trine Trilogy Edition with an artbook and the OST?

We have a digital Trilogy edition available on Steam, and there’s OST’s available for all three games, but we haven’t made an art book for Trine 3 yet. I don’t think we’ll make one unless we decide to do a retail version, but that’s not something we have planned at this point.

Trine-2-DC-Europe-Concept-Forest

How has Frozenbyte evolved since the release of the first Trine?

We’ve definitely grown size (from around 20 people up to around 65 people now) and learned a lot of lessons on the way about game development and the business in general. After each release you learn something new, and we’re ready to try some different game genres next!

You have just announced Shadwen. How would you describe this stealth game to our readers?

With Shadwen, we want to go back to the old-school stealth games where you actually have to hide, sneak around and fight smartly (or use other, non-violent means) in contrast to a lot of modern, so-called stealth-focused games where you can just fight your way through everything. We want the stealth to be absolutely pivotal while giving players a choice between different methods to complete levels. You can opt to use violence or take a super-sneaky peaceful route!

The game will have very free movement with a rope that will have a lot of utility, and you’ll be able to create loads of different traps like poison traps, smoke bombs and other gadgets to aid you on your quest. A key feature is frozen time: When you’re not controlling Shadwen, time stays still, and that lets you plan your movements and actions very precisely. We also have an instantaneous time-rewind that lets you revert what you’ve done and try a different approach if you fail at doing something. It’s a very fun feature, but also a very necessary one because the game is instantly over if you get detected by the guards!

The core of the game boils down to what way people opt to play – the violent or non-violent way. Players are faced with the moral consequences of killing, and the story will change according to what methods you choose. So the question becomes: to kill or not to kill?

Were you inspired from any specific game for Shadwen?

We were inspired by the lack of real stealth in a lot of modern assassination/stealth games 

How is Shadwen different from your previous games? Does it have something more?

We’re a lot more focused on gameplay and it’ll be vastly different from the very light-hearted fantasy world of Trine. So grittier, darker environments on the art side, and the emotion-packed story will explore more difficult themes.

Could you tell us something more about the protagonist and her story? And what about that little girl?

The protagonist in the story is Shadwen, an assassin on a quest to kill the King, who encounters a little orphaned girl, Lily. Due to the circumstances in which they meet, Lily ends up following Shadwen on the dangerous journey, and there’s always trouble ahead. When the ruthless guards get too close, Shadwen must take action right in front of Lily’s eyes, and has to decide whether to use violence and let Lily witness her crimes, or to try and find another way and protect the child’s innocence.

What’s the biggest challenge of Shadwen in terms of game development?

Two of the biggest challenges are AI related – the guards need to be able to detect players in a variety of ways and work together in a functioning unit. In the current pre-alpha demo for example, they’re pretty much bucket-heads that are legally blind and deaf, so they need a lot of work still 

The child character, Lily, is also a big AI challenge because we don’t want her to end up as end up as a painstaking escort mission-type of character that feels like a burden to the player. So she needs to be useful, smart and something players will want to have around because of her qualities.

A third challenge (one that we’ve already solved though!) was the in-game time rewind mechanic. It rewinds everything that has happened, so when combined with many dynamic objects and possible things you can do in the game, it gets tricky. Think of a shelf full of bottles that you knock over and the contents just fly around the room everywhere. It looks really cool when you rewind that stuff!

Thank you for this interview.

Thanks for the questions, and Happy Holidays!
