Grazie mille.

ENGLISH VERSIONE (Q&A)

Hello, please introduce yourself to our readers. Why “Logic Artists” and what are your experiences in the game development?

My name is Jonas Wæver, I’m the Creative Director at Logic Artists. Logic Artists is an independent game development studio from Copenhagen, Denmark. Our studio was established by myself and two university classmates in 2011.

Since then we’ve grown from three people to sixteen full time employees. During that growth, we’ve published two games. Our first game, Expeditions: Conquistador, is a historically themed turn-based RPG set in the Age of Exploration. As the player, you lead a Spanish expedition into the Aztec territories, which are now Mexico, a few years before Hernan Cortez, and get the opportunity to determine the course of history.

Our newest game, Clandestine, is currently in Early Access. Clandestine is a hacking and stealth based spy thriller set in the mid-1990’s. Our story begins with the mysterious disappearances and deaths of a number of spies on both sides of the former Iron Curtain. This results in the formation of a top secret special task force made up primarily of members of the CIA and the Russian FSB, to share resources in an effort to discover the intelligence leak. Clandestine is an asymmetrical co-op spy game where one player plays as Katya, the Russian FSB Agent, an on-the-ground spy character who must infiltrate and navigate the levels carefully. Our second player character is Martin, the NSA Hacker. Martin operates with a 2D interface which grants him access to the levels’ networks and infrastructure. Martin’s job is to assist Katya in her missions by providing mission-critical information and watching her back. This can include hacking devices, spying through cameras, and cracking security passwords and emails. While we’re in Early Access, we are holding back Clandestine’s story missions as we don’t want to spoil them before they’re completely done, voice-over and everything.

What has inspired Clandestine during its development?

For Clandestine, we’ve gathered lots of inspiration from various areas of spy fiction (and spy fact), with a particular interest in the spy adventure/thriller films of the 90’s, like Mission: Impossible and Sneakers. Spy fiction had a very distinct tone during the 90’s, very post-Cold War, when computer hacking became an integral part of the genre as this new and exciting thing that seemed almost omnipotent. In other ways, we were inspired by John le Carré’s novels, which are much more realistic and down-to-earth than the high-octane Tom Clancy-style stuff that usually gets turned into videogames. Of course we’ve also taken inspiration from lots of other videogames, including basically every stealth game ever made, and any game that has anything to do with hacking.

What do you think about the Steam Early Access?

The Steam Early Access program is an exciting and interesting new method of game development. One of the things that can make developing games as an independent studio more difficult is a lack of exposure to users during development. Early Access is an opportunity for indie developers to mingle with users earlier than usual. It benefits us as developers because we get a chance to try things out with our players, and the player community gets the chance to try a game they are interested in while the game is still in development and give feedback which can directly influence the game’s final mechanics. This is a rare chance for gamers to communicate directly with developers and have a legitimate voice during a game’s development. As with many of these new unorthodox methods of development there are successes and failures. There is room for flawed expectations to turn into disappointments, and for misunderstandings or miscommunication to turn out as negative outcomes and experiences for everyone involved.

We don’t believe that Early Access will work for every game project or player. Each participant (devs and players alike) must measure what they will get out of the experience and choose for themselves if they feel that Early Access is right for them. For Clandestine, we felt that Early Access would be a fantastic opportunity to show off the game mechanics to a group of interested players and gather their feedback on it. To do so without spoiling the game’s story experience we built four challenge maps with three different mission types. These maps exist within the game’s universe and will also feature as optional side missions in the final game. In this way, we could present the game’s core mechanics to players without having to worry about ruining the final experience for any of our Early Access players.

Have you already planned a release date for Clandestine 1.0?

We are planning to release Clandestine some time in May 2015.

clandestine 010415 c

Is there any plans to expansion packs/DLC or will it depend on the sales that will be achieved?

There will be DLC for Clandestine, but we won’t be starting any work on it until after release. If the game does well, we have some plans for expansions that we’d really like to do.

What was the most difficult aspect to balance or create in Clandestine? And why gamers should play Clandestine, in your opinion?

The hardest part to balance is that the game should be equally as playable (and ideally equally as much fun) in singleplayer as it is in co-op. Most co-op experiences revolve around parallel play, where two or more players play in the same level at the same time, but aren’t directly reliant on each other for success. Clandestine’s co-op experience focuses on this idea that a field team must work together by communicating and problem solving as a team. This makes it particularly difficult to ensure that the game is enjoyable in singleplayer also, because we can’t just take away half the enemies and call it a day, we have to add a bunch of extra features specifically for singleplayer, to make it possible for one player to fill both roles at the same time. It’s something we’ve been very conscious about right from the start.

What prompted you to base the game especially on the cooperative mode, although it is playable in solo?

It all comes back to this idea of collaboration, in some of the great spy/hacker films of the 90’s there is an agent who is very talented, but is completely out of their depth without someone feeding them information. You see these superspies performing incredible tasks, but we often forget that it is their support team that gets them through security. We wanted players to feel like they were genuinely stepping into these roles, which meant splitting up mechanics and information between them to encourage communication.

Can you tell us a bit more about the campaign mode? How many missions there will be and what about the duration and the replay value? In addition, will there be new challenges in version 1.0?

There will be a mission HQ and eight story missions in the campaign mode. Based on what we have right now, it looks like the total play time for the game will be somewhere around 15 hours. On top of that, the missions are highly replayable for a variety of reasons. First, players will be able to play as either the Spy or the Hacker and experience the game differently from these asymmetrical perspectives. Secondly, we apply some randomization to different elements of the level, for example: security cameras spawn in a variety of locations, enemies may spawn in different places and choose different patrol patterns, and passwords and door codes are randomized every time the level loads.

clandestine 010415 d

How many types of weapons and gadgets do you plan on adding to Clandestine? Are you thinking of proposing different costumes for Katya and Martin, maybe unlockable as a reward game?

There are seven different pistols with various ammunition types and a variety of gadgets and hacker tools that will be unlocked as the player progresses through the story. We do have three outfits for Katya – a covert ops outfit and a low profile outfit, plus a special mission-specific outfit that we plan to unlock for any mission once you’ve completed the game. The covert ops outfit gives Katya more equipment slots and armor, but carries the penalty of not being very subtle. So while she can carry more ammo and gear, none of the social engineering elements of the game will be available while wearing the tactical gear, and enemies will be slightly faster to identify her as a threat. The social engineering mechanics in the story missions allow players to move freely in certain areas and to bypass certain security checkpoints by manipulation instead of violence.

10 Steam achievements and trading cards: there will be? As you know, a lot of Steam users go crazy about these things.

Absolutely! There will be a full compliment of trading cards and achievements on full release of Clandestine.

You also have experience in mobile gaming, Clandestine may one day get on these entertainment systems?

There are no plans to make Clandestine available for mobile platforms.
